Noise Changes in noise legislation

On 6 April 2006, the Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005 came into effect.

This may affect your work place.

Key points of the legislation

  • First and second action levels of noise have been reduced by 5dB(A). This is equivalent to fifteen levels of noise.
  • Employers have a responsibility to 'eliminate at source or reduce to a minimum' noise in the workplace. Previously employers only had a duty of care to reduce the level of noise in the workplace to a reasonably practicable level.
  • Employers must provide hearing protection zones where technically possible and justified by the risk of exposure to noise.

What this means to you

If noise is a potential issue for your company, in order to comply with the new legislation, first you need to know the risks of noise exposure in your workplace.

In other words, you must undertake a noise survey to discover if your noise levels are within permitted guidelines.

If required, you must undertake remedial action and make the necessary adjustments to your health and safety policies and procedures.

How to be compliant

At ACS our professional team can ensure that you understand and comply with the new regulations.

All our surveyors have been trained to the British Occupational Hygiene Society's M104 module on noise and vibration and are qualified to assist in completing fully compliant noise surveys.
